What Are Kidney Stones?
Kidney stones or renal calculi are stones that form inside one or both of your kidneys. They are formed when extra salts and minerals in your urine accumulate in your kidneys.
What causes Kidney Stones?
Low fluid intake
Chronic diarrhoea/watery stools
High salt intake
Bowel diseases
Medications such as potassium-sparing diuretics (water pills)
Vitamin C and vitamin D supplements
Sharp moving pain in the sides and back that radiates to the lower abdomen and groinl
Persistent need to urinate
Difficulty in urinating
Burning sensation while urinating
Dark or red urine
Cloudy or foul-smelling urine
Nausea and vomiting
Fever and chills in case of infection
Blood Tests: To assess the kidney function and check for infections and other conditions
Urine Tests: To check the level of minerals in the urine
Imaging Techniques: Imaging tests such as X-ray, IVP, Ultrasound abdomen and CT scans are done to check for the size and location of the stones
Types of Kidney Stones
Calcium stones: Most common type and is formed due to high levels of calcium in the urine
Uric acid stones: Formed due to high levels of uric acid in the urine (pH level below 5.5)

Surgical options
Your Practo Care doctor will plan the treatment according to the size of the stones
  • For small to medium-sized stones located anywhere in the urinary tract
  • Performed under local or general anaesthesia
  • A ureteroscope is inserted into the bladder and ureter
  • Once the stones are located, lasers or other instruments are used to snare (trap) or break the stones into smaller pieces, so that they can be passed through urine
  • For the removal of larger stones (>5mm)
  • Performed under local or general anaesthesia
  • Sound waves are used to break down the stones into smaller pieces, so that they can easily pass down through the ureters and into the bladder
  • For stones that are larger than 2cm
  • Performed under general anaesthesia
  • Surgical instruments are inserted through a small incision in your back for the removal of the stones
  • Performed with laser and requires no incisions
  • A ureteroscope is passed into your urinary tract
  • The stones are broken into small pieces with the help of laser beams
  • A stent (a tiny tube) may be placed in the ureters for a few days to ease the passage of the stone fragments
  • When the parathyroid gland produces excess parathyroid hormone (hyperparathyroidism), it increases the calcium levels in the blood causing kidney stones
  • In such cases, the parathyroid gland is removed
When the stones are small (<5mm in diameter), the doctor would recommend
  • Painkillers - reduce pain
  • NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) - bring down the swelling
  • Antibiotics - prevent bacterial/secondary infections
  • Diuretics - increase the frequency and volume of urine
2Lifestyle Modifications
  • Drink 7 to 8 glasses of water per day to flush out the small stones
  • Modify your diet with low salt and low protein

What happens if you delay the treatment/surgery?
Certain complications may arise if kidney stones are not treated on time
Infection: fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, difficulty and burning sensation while passing urine
Urinary retention: fragments of stones can block the ureters and cause urinary retention
Kidney damage: the kidneys may stop functioning leading to kidney failure
For the treatment of kidney stones, you can consult a urologist (a specialist who diagnoses and treats problems related to the urinary tract) or a nephrologist (one who treats conditions affecting the kidneys).
Yes, drinking plenty of fluids or water is recommended for flushing out small kidney stones and preventing the new ones from forming.
There is a possibility that kidney stones may recur. Some lifestyle changes such as drinking more water, limiting the intake of sodium and animal proteins, and staying physically active help prevent kidney stones and avoid recurrence.
Complications with kidney stone surgeries are rare; obstruction or injury to the ureters or urinary tract infection are possible.
DepenContact your doctor immediately in case of
1. Severe pain
2. Blood in the urine
3. Vomiting
4. Fever with/without chills
Dietary modifications that help prevent kidney stones include limiting your intake of sodium (as it can promote calcium build-up in the urine), animal proteins, and foods with high oxalate content such as spinach, berries, nuts, and chocolate. Consult a dietician/nutritionist for further guidance.
