Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Early Pregnancy Scan?

Early Pregnancy Scan is also known as the Viability Scan or Dating Scan. This scan is done to reassure the couple on pregnancy at this early stage of pregnancy. An Early Pregnancy Scan can be done as early as 6 weeks of the pregnancy. At 6 weeks, the heartbeat of the fetus is audible. When an Early Pregnancy Scan is done to confirm a healthy pregnancy it is known as Viability Scan whereas when done to calculate the due date of the pregnancy it is known as the Dating Scan. Usually, Early Pregnancy Scan is done trans-abdominally but sometimes it is also done vaginally to get more clear images of the fetus during the early gestational period. Vaginal Early Pregnancy Scan is done due to many reasons such as if the womb is retroverted (inverted backward), or if the pregnancy is fewer weeks then the patient calculated.

Why is an Early Pregnancy Scan done/performed?

Early Pregnancy Scan is done for the following reasons:

  1. To check whether the pregnancy sac is within the uterus and to eliminate ectopic pregnancy
  2. To check the viability of the fetus
  3. To check the presence of a heartbeat
  4. To calculate the gestational week and due date
  5. To determine single or multiple pregnancies
  6. To check if spotting or bleeding observed
  7. To examine placenta, uterus, cervix, ovaries

How to prepare for an Early Pregnancy Scan?

  1. An Early Pregnancy Scan is carried out by trained and professional Sonographers. The scans are carried out in dimly lit rooms so that the sonographers can see the scans properly on the screen.
  2. The patient is asked to full the bladder as the scan are more clear when the bladder is full.
  3. The patient will be asked to lie down on the bed or couch and asked to lower the bottom she is wearing till the hips and lift the top till the chest hence the abdomen is bare. The gel is applied to the abdomen to make good contact between the abdomen and the probe used during sonography and a black and which image of the fetus is seen on the screen.
  4. Usually, the scans don’t hurt but the sonographer has to apply little pressure on the abdomen to get the better visuals of the fetus.
  5. The scan usually takes around 30 minutes.

What are the findings during an Early Pregnancy Scan?

  1. At 6 weeks - this is a very early stage of the pregnancy, hence the amniotic sac and uterus are examined. The heartbeat of the fetus will be audible and if the heartbeat is not heard then either the pregnancy is of fewer weeks then calculated or the fetus is nor viable. If a heartbeat is heard then the chances of miscarriage are reduced to approximately 10%.
  2. At 7 weeks - at this stage, the heartbeat is audible and the separation of the embryo from the amniotic sac is seen. The CRL (Crown Rump Length) is measured at this stage i.e., the length of the whole fetal body is measured. CRL is done to ensure the accurate weeks of the pregnancy and the due date can be calculated. At this stage, if the fetal heartbeat is heard then the chances of miscarriage drops to 5%.
  3. At 8 weeks - if the heartbeat is present at this stage, then the chances of the miscarriage drop to only 2%. At this stage, the fetus seen making a few movements usually past 8 weeks, which are mesmerizing for the couple to watch.
  4. At 9-10 weeks - at this stage, the baby is recognized as a developing fetus. If at this stage the heartbeat is heard and the size of the baby is appropriate then the chances of the miscarriage drop to 1%.
