Diabetologists are medical professionals and Endocrinologists who have specialized training in metabolic disorders. Diabetologists help the patients to lower their blood glucose or sugar levels through medications, lifestyle modifications, exercises, and diet. They work closely with diabetic educators, nurses, renal physicians, podiatrists, and ophthalmologists to educate, treat, and monitor the patients.
A 5-year medical degree [MBBS] that is recognized by the General Medical Council and a 2-year foundation course of general training are the basic requirements for an individual to be a doctor. However, following are the specialties or extra qualifications required to be a Diabetologist:
Patients who are suffering from diabetes should consult a Diabetologist at least once in 3 to 4 months or as directed by the doctor. A healthy individual can consult a Diabetologist once in a year to check his/her sugar levels.
If an individual is suffering from any of the following medical conditions or diseases, then he/she should consult a Diabetologist.
Diabetologists are medical professionals who treat people suffering from diabetes and Endocrinologists are the doctors who specialize in treating all diseases that affect the endocrine organs. However, Endocrinologists can also treat diabetic patients, as diabetes is one of the medical conditions in endocrinology.
Endocrinologists are specialized doctors who treat patients with hormonal imbalance and metabolic disorders. However, Diabetologists are certified Endocrinologists who can treat thyroid disorders.
Diabetologists may not treat renal diseases like urinary tract infections, glomerulonephritis, kidney stones, or polycystic kidney disease, etc. However, diabetic nephropathy can be treated by a Diabetologist by controlling blood sugar levels and blood pressure.
